About
Haruru Falls is one of Northland's most accessible and photogenic waterfall experiences, located just a short drive from Waitangi near the Bay of Islands. The falls themselves aren't massive—they drop about 10 metres into a peaceful pool—but what makes Haruru Falls stand out is the lush native bush setting and the ease of access. You'll find yourself surrounded by tall kahikatea and rimu trees, with the Haruru River creating a soothing backdrop that feels genuinely isolated despite being only minutes from the main road.
Visiting Haruru Falls takes anywhere from 20 minutes to an hour depending on how long you linger, making it ideal for families with young kids, couples after a quick nature walk, or solo travellers wanting a peaceful forest experience. The track down to the pool is well-maintained but does involve some steps and a bit of climbing, so it's moderately accessible rather than fully wheelchair-friendly. The main experience is simply standing by the pool, listening to the water, and taking photos—there's not much "doing" involved, but that's precisely the point. It's worth the visit if you're after genuine nature rather than an adrenaline rush.
Haruru Falls fits naturally into a Bay of Islands trip, especially if you're exploring Waitangi or heading towards the Haruru Falls Bridge and Waitomo Caves region. Many visitors combine it with Waitangi National Trust Estate or as a break between other Northland attractions. Year-round it's beautiful, though after heavy rain the falls are at their most impressive and the bush is lushest during spring and early summer. Winter can be muddy underfoot, so good shoes are essential any time of year.
