Oakura Beach is one of Northland's most underrated coastal gems, tucked away on the eastern side of the Kaipara Peninsula near Paparoa. This sweeping, golden-sand beach stretches for kilometres with dramatic pohutukawa-clad headlands at each end, creating the kind of untouched, cinematic Kiwi beach experience that feels a world away from the busier northern hotspots. It's famous locally for its consistent swell, pristine conditions, and the fact that it's never genuinely crowded—even during summer holidays. The beach has a wild, windswept character that appeals to surfers, walkers, and photographers who value authenticity over Instagram crowds.
Visitors should expect a genuine, no-frills beach experience: safe swimming in calmer patches, excellent rock-pool exploration at the southern end, and outstanding opportunities for long beach walks or photography, especially at dawn and dusk. Most people spend 2–4 hours here, combining a swim or walk with a picnic. There are basic facilities nearby in Paparoa, but the beach itself is fairly undeveloped, which is part of its charm. The drive from Whangarei takes about 45 minutes, making it accessible for a day trip.
Oakura fits perfectly into a Northland coastal loop, sitting between the quieter Kaipara region and the busier Bay of Islands further north. It pairs well with a visit to nearby Paparoa Village or a longer exploration of the eastern Kaipara coastline. Spring (September–November) and autumn (March–May) offer the most consistent weather and clearest light.
