Orana Wildlife Park, located on McLeans Island Road in Harewood just outside Christchurch, is one of New Zealand's most immersive open-range wildlife experiences. Unlike traditional zoos, Orana lets you get genuinely close to animals—giraffes will eat from your hand, rhinos roam freely, and you'll encounter native kiwi and tuatara in carefully designed habitats. It's famous for its conservation work and breeding programmes, particularly with endangered species, making every visit directly support animal welfare and research.
Expect to spend 2–3 hours wandering through different zones, from the African savannah section to native New Zealand forest enclosures. The atmosphere is relaxed and educational without feeling preachy; staff are knowledgeable and happy to chat. Orana fits well into a Christchurch trip rather than Wellington proper (note: the address is actually in Christchurch, not Wellington)—pair it with a visit to the nearby Willowbank Wildlife Reserve or the Christchurch Botanic Gardens for a full nature-focused day. Spring and early summer (September–November) are best, when animals are most active and the gardens are in bloom. It's open year-round, but winter visits can be quieter and slightly less comfortable for standing around.
