Rainbow Reach Bridge is one of Fiordland's most photogenic moments, a modest swing bridge that crosses the Eglinton River along the Kepler Track near Te Anau. What makes it special isn't just the bridge itself—it's the frame it creates. On clear days, the bridge perfectly captures the raw beauty of the Fiordland landscape: beech forest walls, the river below, and often an actual rainbow arcing across the valley when conditions align. It's a genuine highlight that justifies its 4.7-star rating, not because of scale, but because of how it distils what Fiordland does best.
Expect a short, easy detour that takes 10–15 minutes return from the main track. The bridge is sturdy and safe, with gentle sway when you walk across—part of its charm. It suits everyone: families with school-age kids, couples after a memorable photo spot, and solo walkers wanting a manageable nature moment. The river views are stunning from both sides, and the native bush surrounds you completely. Come midday for the best light if you're chasing photos. If you're based in Te Anau exploring Milford Sound, Doubtful Sound, or nearby attractions, a few hours on the Kepler Track to reach this bridge is an excellent, less-crowded alternative to the major scenic drives.
