About
Tapeka Point Track in Russell is one of Bay of Plenty's most rewarding short walks, offering panoramic views across the Bay of Islands and out to Cape Brett. This well-maintained loop track sits at the northern tip of Russell peninsula and rewards walkers with sweeping coastal vistas, native bush, and on clear days, sight lines all the way to Hole in the Rock. It's famous among locals for being accessible yet genuinely scenic—you don't need to be a serious tramper to experience something special here.
Expect a gentle, easy-to-moderate walk that takes around 45 minutes to an hour depending on pace and photo stops. The track is suitable for families with school-age kids, couples after a peaceful outing, and solo walkers seeking quiet reflection with a view. The path winds through regenerating native forest with kauri and pohutukawa trees, emerging onto open headland where the views really open up. The ground can be muddy after rain, so good footwear matters. There's a small carpark at Du Fresne Place, and the walk is best done when weather's clear—fog can reduce visibility significantly, and afternoon crowds are lighter than midday.
Tapeka Point fits perfectly into a Russell village visit: combine it with the nearby Christ Church, a fish-and-chips lunch by the waterfront, or the ferry ride from Paihia across the bay. Most visitors spend 2–3 hours total including the walk and a stop for coffee. Spring (September–November) and autumn (March–May) offer the most pleasant walking conditions, though summer crowds are heavier. Winter days can be crisp and clear, making it an underrated shoulder-season choice.
